Wisconsin Equine Derby Weekend 2016

Wisconsin Equine Derby Weekend 2016
Emily Anderson won the first Barbara Biever Memorial Equitation Classic.

West Bend, WI – August 26, 2016 – The Wisconsin Equine Derby Weekend provided a fun and educational weekend at the Washington County Fairgrounds, August 19th -21st. Hosted by Courtney Hayden Fromm and Old Seoul Equestrian, the event offers a clinic, showing, shopping and plenty of hospitality.

John McQueen and Teri Knowlton were fantastic clinicians and very fair judges. Everyone enjoyed their positive feedback and fun clinic exercises during Friday’s sessions.

Given Mother’s Nature’s challenging weather, “I’d say we had Sunshine on a Rainy Day!” commented Fromm. Scattered thunderstorms swept across the area all day.

The Antares Pizza Party and Cedar Creek Equestrian 4 Bar Challenge ended the day with full bellies and lots of cheering for both first time 4 Bar competitors and those participating for the 4th year!  When the last fence reached 4’6″ the clean round belonged to Patty Van Housen’s Roc of Angels ridden by Courtney Ballantyne.

There was not an empty seat under the tent for Manchester Farm’s complimentary cocktails and the Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital Exhibitor and Buyers Dinner. The tent was filled with old friends, new friends and an abundance of laughter.

Once the serious competition was complete, Hunter Teams were drawn and competitors dashed to Walmart to find costumes and design team spirit posters.  Four teams competed for the top prize; Gotta Catchem All, Team #1 or Team # None, Unicorn Pigtails and 3 to 1.

The live auction energized the crowd for a fun night under the lights. The Hunter Teams and the Jumper Sweepstakes Calcutta raised over $10,000.00!  Cedar Creek Equestrian and the Hoch Family won the bid for Team #1 or Team # None, team members Natalie Osieczanek, Hannah Hoch, Katelyn Schultz and Jackie Arcara proved to be Team #1, winning the class over a Handy Course.  The High Bidder for the Jumpers (anonymous) and the Jumper Sweepstakes winner Courtney Ballantyne put their earnings back in the pot for Healing Haven of WI.

Lisa Wenger of Healing Haven said, “What an absolutely amazing day! The horse community truly stepped up to change the lives and the outlook of so many people dealing with cancer, at least 25 to be exact.  It truly humbles and overwhelms me.”

Show manager Fromm added, “I wanted to give local riders a chance to ‘show in the big Saturday night class under the lights. I have been in horses my whole life and I don’t remember ever having an opportunity to show under the lights in Wisconsin.”

UlcerGuard/GastroGuard Brunch started Sunday off right with a pancake bar, eggs, bacon, sausage and fresh fruits topped off with the Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar sponsored by Hidden View Farm.

Helen Biever joined Teri Knowlton in the judge’s booth for the very first Barbara Biever Memorial Equitation Classic, held exactly one year from Barbara’s passing.

“Mom would have been proud to be a part of such a great event and the horsemanship the riders demonstrated today,” said Biever.

With 22 entries, Barbara’s class was the most competitive at the horse show.  Judged 20 percent on a horsemanship quiz, 30 percent on the flat and 50 percent over fences, Emily Anderson and her mount Unexpected Journey topped the class winning the Barbara Biever Memorial Perpetual Trophy.

Then we turned the reins over to those with a need for speed and they did not disappoint.

“We are always exhausted at the end of the Derby weekend, but it’s a good exhausted.  The kindness, accomplishments, memories and friendships this brings to our lives and the industry are truly priceless.  I am just so thankful and grateful to everyone who supports this show, especially the sponsors because without them we would be jumping twigs in a hay field with pats on the back and thumbs up for prizes!” concluded Fromm.
