COWBOYS, RUNNERS AND MARCHING BANDS MERGE FOR HOUSTON LIVESTOCK SHOW AND RODEO
HOUSTON, (HLSR) – The city’s excitement for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ continues to build the weekend before the Show with the arrival of 13 trail rides at Memorial Park Friday, Feb. 27, and the ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run and the Downtown Rodeo Parade, Saturday, Feb. 28.
The 28th annual ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run commenced with more than 13,000 participants total in the wheelchair race, 10K race, 5K fun run/walk and costume contest. All race entry fees are donated annually to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund. Since 1988, ConocoPhillips has contributed more than $4 million to the Show.

The Downtown Rodeo Parade began at 10 a.m. and was led by grand marshal Steve Patterson, The University of Texas at Austin’s Men’s Athletic Director. Patterson previously held the position of senior vice president and chief development officer of the Houston Texans and played an influential part in building today’s NRG Stadium. In addition, Patterson has a history with other Houston professional sports teams in Houston, including the NBA’s Houston Rockets and the Houston Aeros hockey team.
Hundreds of thousands of spectators lined the streets and sidewalks as decorative floats, wagons, marching bands, and trail rides made their way through the route starting at Bagby and Walker streets and ending at Lamar and Bagby.
Parade floats were judged along the route in different categories. The 2015 Downtown Rodeo Parade winners are:

Trail Rides at Memorial Park
More than 3,000 trail riders participated in the long-standing Show tradition of traveling on horseback from different locations across the state of Texas, including the Texas borders with Louisiana and Mexico. The riders arrived at their final camp site in Houston, Memorial Park, on Friday, Feb. 27.
Along the journey, the trail rides were judged on appearance, authenticity and overall Western spirit. The 2015 Trail Ride winners are:
Safety Award – Valley Lodge Trail Ride
Spirit Award – Salt Grass Trail Ride
Spirit Award – Texas Independence Trail Ride
Division 3 Award (average 50 riders during the week) – Old Spanish Trail Ride
Division 2 Award (average 100 riders during the week) – Spanish Trail Ride
Division 1 Award (average 200 riders per day) – Texas Independence Trail Ride
The 13 participating trail rides are: Los Vaqueros Rio Grande, Mission, Northeastern, Old Spanish, Prairie View, Salt Grass, Sam Houston, Southwest, Southwestern, Spanish, Texas Cattlemen’s, Texas Independence and Valley Lodge. The longest trail ride, Los Vaqueros Rio Grande, left Feb. 7 and began its 386 mile-long journey from the Texas-Mexico border. Texas Cattlemen’s Trail Ride, the shortest trail ride, began in Anderson, Texas, Feb. 21, and traveled 69 miles.
Growing from four men traveling from Brenham, Texas, in 1952, to more than 3,000 riders traveling from all over Texas, the sense of history and pride still lives in each rider.
